I have extensive experience facilitating learning at museums, including the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), Field Museum of Natural History (FMNH), and Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (USNM). Highlights of my time as an educator at museums include 1) explaining fossils in the AMNH Educational Laboratory for Comparative Genomics and Human Origins, 2) communicating my research in the FMNH Evolving Planet exhibit as a part of Research Speaks or their Discovery Squad, and 3) guiding museum visitor through an object-based exploration of primate hand structure and function for Expert Is In at USNM.
Anytime I hear about an event that involves bringing science to the public, I jump at the opportunity. I have volunteered for events in New York City and Chicago, including TEDx, Columbia, the World Science Festival, Columbia University Neuroscience Outreach Saturday Science, the South Side Science Festival, Research Speaks at the Field Museum, Expand Your Horizons Chicago, the DuSable Museum's Juneteenth Festival, and more.
Outside of events and guest "lectures", most of my experience working with students in the classroom has been in association with Citizen Schools, a non-profit that works with middle schools across the U.S. to provide extra-curricular learning and community to students in low-income communities. In my role as a citizen teacher with Citizen Schools, I have designed and led students through a curriculum of activities related to neuroscience, including sheep brain dissections, creating anatomically accurate neurons from pipe cleaners and other craft materials, and designing optical illusions.
